This blog began as a daily painting blog but as life changes, so does a blog. It has become a journal of a writer who paints and enthusiastically works outdoors to maintain fitness.

January 20 Gilding the Lily

Today's painting has a nearly perfect background. I know, that's open to interpretation. I liked it. I considered painting a portrait of someone in front of it but know better than to start something like that after 7 p.m. So, instead, I gilded the lily - painted something unnecessarily pretty on something that was already neat all by itself. And I used a little rubber cement to make it stick.

I can hardly wait to get Jim's ideas on this one. Jim?

  1. I don't think I can offer what you'd want Nan. It is late; hard day. This reminds me of Uncle Remus. I am reminded of Brer' Rabbit. I can't seem to express myself, and this is a very public forum (I'd feel better if you had fewer followers). I want to say it's like molasses in a jester's hat; which leads me to Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I think the 3 dimensional element of the lily adds a very nice dimension (is it a Stargazer? I always had pink Stargazers).

As I read what I just wrote, it is indeed what I want to sday----just not what I want (all of) you to read.

  2. I always wondered where Rubber Cement came from. I thought it might be a mineral but was really surprised to see was a flower(vegetable).
I might be interested in some seeds as it will save trip to the hardware store.

  3. Yes, it is a little jesterish and I do remember the tar baby, as politically incorrect as it might be-- oops maybe that's only my left over image from fifty years ago. Dawn's glass flower must have figured into this, too.

Mark, just wait til you see what else grows in my "garden."

  4. Reminds me of the scene in Ferngully after Krista has saved the forest and everyone thinks she's gone. Then a flower blooms and Krista is asleep in the center of the flower. What does rubber cement do when it wakes?
